Our group is rapidly expanding, and we will soon update to include our current collaborators and student teams.

“Alone, we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller

Dr. Lisa Tobber, Principal Investigator, Group Leader is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering at UBC in the Okanagan. She is an expert in structural engineering, specifically in the seismic response of structures in earthquakes. Dr. Tobber is committed to the principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion to ensure an inclusive and safe environment for teaching, learning and research.

Amirhossein Amiri is an M.Sc. student in the field of structural and earthquake engineering. He got his B.Sc. degree from the Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), Isfahan, Iran. He is interested in the seismic design of tall buildings, application of machine learning in earthquake engineering, seismic design of precast structures, finite element-based simulations. These days he is working on a paper related to the RC coupling beams to derive the empirical relations.

Deepak Saud is currently studying MASc in Civil Engineering at UBC Okanagan. He supported communities to build earthquake resilient structures through compliance and enforcement of the Nepal National Building Code in 30 municipalities of Nepal. He conducted numerous training on earthquake-resistant design and construction to engineers and other stakeholders at local, regional and national levels. He worked as a Technical Coordinator for the earthquake-affected 32 districts of Nepal and supported the Government of Nepal (GoN) on the post-earthquake housing reconstruction. He has firsthand field experience of seismic vulnerability damage assessment, earthquake-resistant construction, seismic retrofit and rehabilitation of buildings, and post-earthquake damage assessment.

Chadia Uwamahoro is an incoming PhD student and Graduate Research Assistant at the School of Engineering on UBC’s Okanagan campus. She was born in Kigali, Rwanda completed her Bachelor’s degree (Honors with distinction) in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio (USA), from 2012 to 2018. Her Master’s Thesis was focused on “Setting Bar-Bending requirements for High-Strength Steel Bars in Cold Temperature.” In giving back to society, she started a consulting firm to help disadvantaged communities with initiatives and programs that help to build houses for refugees in her home country.

Mona Sabounchi is an incoming Graduate student and Graduate Research Assistant in the school of Engineering at the University of British Columbia in the Okanagan. She completed her bachelor’s degree (2014)  and master’s degree (2017) concentrating on structures at the University of Guilan. She has a license in the implementation and supervision area from Guilan Construction Engineering Organization. Her master thesis was about ” A new combination of isolator and damper for improving seismic behavior of concrete buildings “.

Thomas Kavanagh is a visiting researcher, studying General Engineering (Civil) at Durham University in the UK. Whilst he is interested in building design, particularly timber as a high-rise construction material and bunker design, he also has a passion for diversification within the industry. In the past, Thomas has helped design an autonomous mine detection rover, as well as an hypothetical apartment block – later this year, he will be undertaking an internship in industry. Outside of engineering, Thomas is involved in hiking, caving and kayaking, as well as writing, poetry and music.

Thushali Ramkumar is a third year undergraduate student of the University of British Columbia pursuing civil engineering, interested in exploring sustainable and resilient high-rise buildings.
