BUILDING
RELATIONSHIPS
THAT LAST

ASSET works with industry, non-profit organizations, public agencies, and community partners to test, validate, and advance resilient structural and housing systems. We support applied research, product development, technical demonstrations, and evidence-based design.
Have a structural challenge or technology to validate?
ASSET works with partners who are developing new structural products, seismic systems, prefabricated components, housing technologies, and construction methods. Partners often come to us with a technical question, a product that needs testing, or a system that needs independent validation.
These projects usually require some level of partner funding. In many cases, we can help identify matching mechanisms, such as Mitacs, NSERC, or other collaborative funding programs, to make partner funding go further. Examples:
- Seismic performance of a product or system
- Validation of a new structural technology
- Cyclic or large-scale structural testing
- Prefabricated housing systems
- Precast, mass timber, and hybrid components
- Structural connections
- Retrofit concepts
- Code-supporting experimental evidence
- Numerical modelling and interpretation of test results

Want to join the ASSET team?
We are always interested in hearing from exceptional undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows who want to work on structural testing, seismic design, prefabricated construction, resilient housing, numerical modelling, and code-relevant research.

Undergraduate research
Undergraduate students at UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver can get involved through summer research awards, co-op placements, directed studies, capstone projects, and student design teams. Funding and programs to list:
- NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards, USRA. These awards support undergraduate students doing research in natural sciences and engineering. NSERC describes USRAs as awards intended to develop student interest and potential for research careers.
- Indigenous mentorship program.
- UBC Okanagan Undergraduate Research Awards / International Undergraduate Research Awards. UBCO Science describes URA/IURA programs as supporting exceptional undergraduate research experiences at UBC Okanagan.
Student design teams
Undergraduate students can also build practical structural engineering experience through student teams and competitions, including Steel Bridge, PCI Big Beam, and the CPCI Student Competition.
