Unlocking Economic Opportunities Through Disaster Resiliency Research

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister, responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan), announced $1.04 million in funding to the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus (UBCO) to help local businesses implement innovative circular economy practices.  

Minister Harjit Sajjan came to UBC Okanagan campus on the 16th of Nov 2022, to meet the resilient infrastructure researchers, open the UBCO Clean Tech Hub and to announce the PacifiCan funding in research to accelerate circular economy practices. 

Dr. Lisa Tobber and Dr. Shahria Alam elaborated on the current research projects of the resilient structures and infrastructures at the School of Engineering, as well as the plan in this field of research. 

They also described the importance of investing in structural resiliency for national and international economies, considering the increasing trend of natural disaster in the wake of climate change. The discussion highlighted the benefits of disaster preparedness as compared to disaster response, and how changing policies in this regard can help the Canadian economy. It indeed put forward a step towards community resilience.
